The books in this series build on one another but there is quite a bit of info repeated for a new reader of the series not to be lost on the what and why of the story. Events that happened in the first book shaped Holly one of the two main characters this book focus on. The other one is Viper, a vampire that his creation made him different than other vampires. Because of how Holly was turned, Viper has been working with her training even if most of it has been long distance. The two of them are oil and water in the beginning but he does help her with developing her power set and finding out who has put a bounty out on her capture.
Overall a good story and ties into the first book which makes for a good overall story arc in the long run. One of the things I like the most about this writer. She creates interesting settings and has good use of a large cast of characters that are featured in different books. Can’t wait for the next one.

I’m not a follower of this comic but I have seen several over the years that friends have shared over social media. There are running gags about breaking the fourth wall that are amusing and certainly self-depreciating to the creator. This comic is read for the jokes and not for any amazing graphics but it is well worth the read.

This is set in the same universe as Every Heart a Doorway and you will recognize the main characters but you don’t need to know anything about that book to enjoy this one. Jacqueline and Jillian are twins that have parents that expect certain things from them and don’t seem to care that those choices may not be what the girls either need or want. When they are five, the one person that loved them and wanted the best for them was sent away during the night the girls came to realize that they couldn’t trust adults. As they grew apart helped along by the different goals each parent had for them a door opened in the room they were never allowed to go into anymore, their grandmother’s room and the one person who loved them with all her heart.
The girls go in the door and live for years following two separate but entwined destinies in a small village on the moor of a land with a different moon in the sky. Choices are made by both the girls that are shaped in part by how they were raised and paths they decided to take while they live in the village.
After finishing this I really want to go back and reread Every Heart a Doorway so I can see the twins again.

Nothing brings two sides together like a common goal. Former Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr is now enjoying life working with her partners and former soldiers as Wardens for the Justice Dept. A scientific mission has been taken hostage over the possibility there may have found something about the plastic aliens. The mercenaries are a mixed group of Confederation and Primacy members. With a delicate peace hanging in the balance Torin finds herself working with Primacy soldiers but the good news is that she has worked with them before.
The book is great and builds on what has happened in the previous books. I really enjoy this series and I can’t wait to see the next book come out in the series.

There is something about stories set between novels that are really nice. You know that no one is going to die since you have read further along in the series and know who is still living. This is a novella that has Peter tracking down ghost reports on the Tube with help from Jaget who now is now in charge of anything weird on the London Underground. The plus with this being a smaller story we do get more of Abigail and it really looks like in this story that as she grows up she will be working for the Folly as well.
The story is good and the nice thing is there isn’t a lot of actual magic in the story that hasn’t been seen before performed by anyone. What does seem to do the trick for this one is a nice combo of police legwork with the magic helping it out with the ghosts.

Take the idea that something happens in the world and if you are murdered there is 1 in a thousand chance that you would die but the rest of the time you would show back up in your own home naked and alive. Society changes in big and little ways from it. Dispatchers now sit in on surgeries and if things go bad they can “dispatch” you and send you home several hours in your past fully whole most of the time. Dueling and fight clubs are one of the gray areas that people have come up with from this. Rich people use them as a sort of insurance policy since you can die from accidents but being murdered can erase what damage an accident has caused.
The story revolves around the disappearance of a dispatcher and some of the things that people do with this new development in the future. A good interesting read and I wouldn’t mind seeing more stories poking at the problems this helpful occurrence has caused.

The second book continues quickly from the previous book and plows right ahead with the scheming of the houses to come on top. This one also has the dragons dealing with schemes and plots and they are working on an alliance with the House Hawthorn. No matter what happens in the books past events always shape both people and future plans. Overall I enjoyed the book and the worldbuilding but for the most part no one ends up with a completely happy ending. I think it brings home the fact that the Houses provide safety in the world but not much happiness.

This book is a great starting point for the new reader. The setting is new to the returning reader and deals with the bears of Moscow and minor character from the ongoing series. Silver has been poisoned and the only people with access to have done it looks like family. To keep her alive and maintain the charade that everything is fine it is passed off as building bridges with the new alliance. Tthis doesn’t always go to plan and there are attacks in Moscow from the new set of villains hoping to destroy the Psy and anything like an alliance between the three races.
There are some new people brought into the story and I’m sure we will see more of them and I really hope we see more of both Silver’s grandmother and brother.

An urban fantasy that has vampires, werewolves and the Fay all living out in the open. When a talented tattoo artist is turned into a vampire and escapes out of the asylum he has been locked in his former clients become his new prey. The Souljacker is hunting his clients down to remove his art from them since he is no longer inspired to create art since he was turned. Lily is a succubus and one of his former clients. When her Fey Queen commands her to track down the killer she has to obey.
This is the start of a new series and the start of a new chapter in Lily’s life. She has friends and in this book picks up a new job for her Queen and a steady love interest as well.
A fun light read and I’ll be looking for more of these.

This can count as either book 1 or book 4. Since I haven’t read the previous three books that feature Scarlett working for her vampire boss cleaning up any evidence of werewolves or vampires or anything Old World from mere mortals. Scarlett is a mortal but she is a null, someone who can cancel out magic within a small radius around herself. She gets a message to see her old roommate Molly and when she arrives she finds Molly in the middle of a slaughter. Things don’t add up and she quickly decides to help her old friend clear her name. A fast-paced story but I didn’t feel like I was missing anything by reading this book first.

This collection of issues shows some of the best battles in the long run of Wonder Woman. This isn’t the best spot for someone who doesn’t know her history or the supporting players to grab as a first read. It is a great sampling of various art and story styles by people who had had very good runs with the comic. This might have been a friendlier volume to the new fan if there was a page or two of a setup recap instead of showing comic after comic of her taking down some great villains and caring for people at the same time.

This nonfiction book covers the life and death of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Day Queen who was never crowned and never wanted it in the first place. Other people schemed to get her on the throne after the death of Edward VI and she was a pawned used by her father and the Duke of Northumberland to be the puppet for them to rule England. The book is copiously footnoted throughout to support facts given in the book but even with the notes the care of the subject comes through the author’s writings.
The book is an interesting read of the time frame and how some people make poor decision after poor decision to the ruin of their families. In the end the only person out of Jane’s family that does well for themselves is her mother.

Sometimes when you die you become a ghost and still live in our world and interact with everything for the most part. You can take time from people and make them younger and it pushes the ghost closer to the time they can actually depart this world. Ghosts have been hunted for this gift by witches. Jenna is trying to find out what happened to her sister Patty and why she didn’t become a ghost like Jenna. Jenna is working to support her apt and rescue elderly cats from the shelter. She also works as a suicide hotline operator and mostly keeps to herself as she is marking time in this world.
Ghosts have gone missing in NYC and Jenna teams up with a witch to find out where they have gone. The story is good and the story ends on a sweet but sad note. I really enjoyed it and it is nice to read a contained story that doesn’t leave you hanging.
Did you ever wonder about what caused the world to change in the Hollows series? This book tells how the virus that attached itself to tomatoes and killed so many humans and outed the supernaturals to the rest of the world.
Set during the 60’s, fashion and music do play a part to the story and how attitudes towards women pushed the plot a bit but for the most part this is petty revenge of a childhood rivalry gone way out of control. There are some cameos sprinkled in the book and I enjoyed each and every one of them. The nice thing about the book being a prequel is no prior knowledge is needed for a reader so it does appeal to the fan of the Hollows and a new reader picking it up for the first time.

The second novella in this setting is set several years after the previous one. Penric is working with someone of the Father’s order to track down a possible murder suspect that seems to be a shaman. He is comfortable in his role as a divine and has a good working relationship with his demon. This book you learn about shaman that don’t correspond to the Five Gods religion but seems to also be just fine with them.
The actual murder isn’t a mystery but the real mystery is what happens when they catch up with the missing shaman. Overall a great story and it can be read without having read the previous story since the reader is easily caught up with what has happened before.

This story arc seems to start with Harley setting up a fake kidnapping of herself to get her gang thinking for themselves and quickly becomes Harley being kidnapped for real. The new villain makes some bad choices for herself while she is fighting the gang and those parts irked my story wise but overall it was a fun read and the last bit definitely lets you know that this villain will be back at some later date.

Polly is surprised by her mother with a trip to an exclusive school on Earth. Her twin brother thinks this will be great but Polly doesn’t want to go and already has ideas about how her becoming a pilot are mapped out and this school wasn’t in her plans. Turns out the school can really help her out since the cream of political and money circles of Earth go to Galileo Academy. The off world students stick together for most part due to trying to get used to the gravity.
Polly has more issues fitting in then Charles but when things go wrong on an outing for her year mates she jumps in and does the right thing. This helps her out a bit socially but she still isn’t happy at school. More things happen during the school year as Polly and with some assistance from her twin get to the bottom of it.
Overall a good YA read and I’m glad to see more from Carrie Vaughn.

This is a short collection of stories that includes four pieces of fiction that have never been in print. Several of the stories have a humorous bent to them and overall the stories are great. If you haven’t read his stuff before this is a good starting point or if you prefer shorter fiction. Each story has a small illustration preceding it.

My first 2017 book review not sure how many 2017 books I'll get read bore the end of the year.
This book starts with Mercy being kidnapped by the Lord of Night. He has been deliberate misinformation about her and he is convinced that she is the most powerful supernatural in the Tri-Cities. Mercy escapes quite quickly and finds herself in Europe far away from everyone with not even the clothes on her back. It doesn’t take long for her to get into contact with everyone and they are racing to Italy to get to her. Once Adam is there with Marcilia, Stephen, Elizaveta and a few wolves the political dance comes in the forefront and things must be dealt with instead of just getting revenge and scooping Mercy up from where she has hidden herself.
Mercy on the other hand has found the local wolves but has also found local supernatural trouble. This will surprise no reader of the series since chaos finds her wherever she goes. Granted when she does find trouble she fixes it in her own special way that does more good than harm for the final outcome.
A fun fast read and now to wait for the next book.

The newest book is not where a new reader should start. There are lots of references to everything that has happened previously in the books and a throwaway line about the graphic novel stories as well and it does build on what has gone before. People and things that have happened are talked about and they do show up but backstory isn’t given so you need to be fresh up on the story or don’t mind wondering exactly what happened before. With everything going on and there is quite a bit it feels like a turning in the story arc. Potential allies are met and the Faceless Man does show up in this book. After reading this I need to reread the series
Overall this was great and I think the Folly is going to come kicking and screaming into modern policing thanks to Peter. What it has me wondering is will be seeing more apprentices to build up the force since they obviously need the help. They do add a new doctor to help Dr Walid but I think at some point there must be more magic using police if they keep fighting the Faceless Man.
